COLLABORATOR Q&A | MEET LEILA

We interviewed Leila to find out how she became an illustrator, what she loves about it and if she had any top tips for aspiring illustrators!

At what age did you know you wanted to be an illustrator?
16 ! But I only started much much later than that.

Did you always love drawing as a child?
Always! It was my favourite thing to do.

What do you enjoy about illustrating Children’s books?
The drawing part of the process. It's my favourite thing to do.

Do you have a favourite character?
Alice (from Alice in Wonderland.)

How do you start creating a character?
Using shapes and lines to indicate the composition, position and emotion of the character.

Do you prefer to work with pen and paper or digitally on a computer?
Pencil on paper without a doubt. I always carry a sketchbook and pencils.

Where do you get your inspiration from?
Whatever is around me. But sometimes I just open a random book and choose the first word I see and illustrate it.

Are there any artists or illustrators you look up to?
I'm a big fan of Helen Oxenbury and Beatrix Potter.

What are your three top tips for aspiring illustrators?

1 - Draw everyday. It doesn't matter what. And it's ok if you have a bad drawing day. You'll only get better if you keep practicing.

2 - Look at how your favourite illustrators draw and try to emulate their style.

3 - Experiment with different media. Paints, markers, colour pencils, pastel chalks.... have fun.

When you’re not illustrating, what do you like to do?
I spend time with my family if they are around. If I am by myself, I love a walk at the park or a visit to a museum.
